My Take

Abdellatif Kechiche is a filmmaker I associate with raw, almost uncomfortable intimacy. The Tunisian-French director's naturalistic style, those long, unblinking close-ups, won him a stack of Cesar Awards and the 2013 Palme d'Or for Blue Is the Warmest Colour. I admire how completely he commits to emotional truth on screen, even as his methods have drawn real controversy over how he treats actors. That tension sits at the center of how I read his work: undeniably powerful, never comfortable.
