Agnes Chan

Agnes Chan has one of the strangest and most admirable career arcs I know of. She arrived in Japan from Hong Kong in the early seventies as a teenage pop singer, usually a role with a short shelf life. Instead the record shows Japan Record Awards recognition in 1973 and again in 2008, thirty-five years apart, with an entire second life in between. In the late eighties she became a lightning rod for bringing her infant to work, a debate that consumed Japanese media. Rather than wait it out, she went to Stanford, took a doctorate in education, and has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 1998.
