Akane Shiga

Honestly, the moment I heard "female ice hockey player from Hokkaido," I was already impressed — like, that combination just makes sense on a level that's almost poetic. Ice hockey is brutal: you're sprinting on blades, taking hits, playing in arenas cold enough to make your lungs ache, and you have to love it to stick with it. Akane Shiga, born in Obihiro in 2001, grew up in a part of Japan where winter isn't a season so much as a personality — and that kind of upbringing tends to forge something tough and quiet in a person. She's in her mid-twenties and already deep into one of the most physically demanding sports there is, which says a lot without her having to say anything at all. The ice hockey world doesn't get the spotlight it deserves in Japan, but the athletes in it? Completely underrated and absolutely worth paying attention to.
