Aki Higashihara

Aki Higashihara, born in Yokosuka in 1982, moved through gravure into fashion modelling and general television work, and married judo champion Kosei Inoue in 2008. But mention her name online in Japan and someone will bring up the joke instead: the long-running internet meme that anything she writes about on her blog is doomed to misfortune. It is the kind of thing that gets called harmless fun by everyone except the person it is aimed at. What strikes me is how little it seemed to move her. She kept blogging. She kept posting. She did not turn the meme into a defensive brand or a grievance, and she did not vanish from public view either. For a career built partly on being looked at, that is a real display of composure. Japanese celebrity culture rewards visibility and punishes it in the same breath, and she has spent nearly two decades absorbing both without visible damage. The meme will probably outlive the memory of why it started. Her steadiness is the more interesting story.
