My Take
Hitchcock is, for my money, the single most instructive filmmaker to study. What I admire isn't the scares but the patience: he understood that suspense lives in the waiting, in letting the audience know more than the characters and squirm. Over six decades and fifty-plus features he basically wrote the grammar of cinematic tension that everyone still cribs from. The Englishman from Leytonstone earned every honor, from the AFI award to his knighthood. I keep returning to him because his films reward rewatching, you always catch a new piece of his clockwork.
