Andrew McMahon

I have a soft spot for Andrew McMahon. Across Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, he has rebranded again and again without ever losing the earnest, piano-driven heart of his songwriting. Having come through leukemia, he writes with a survivor's clarity that gives even his bright, anthemic songs an undertow of weight. Piano rock can feel sentimental in lesser hands, but McMahon earns his emotion. What I admire most is the consistency of voice beneath the changing band names, the sense that the same honest person is always at the keys.
