August Alsina

August Alsina sings like someone who has actually lived the lyrics. Coming out of New Orleans, he clawed his way up from self-released mixtapes to a 2014 BET Best New Artist award, and you can hear that climb in his voice. What draws me in is his willingness to expose pain and weakness rather than perform invulnerability. The headlines around his personal life can be noisy, but I trust an artist who turns his wounds into songs. That honesty, raw and unpolished, is what real R&B has always been about, and he has it.
