My Take
Ayaka Hirahara made her debut in December 2003 with "Jupiter," a song built on the great swelling melody from the Jupiter movement of Holst's The Planets. She was nineteen. I still think the audacity of that is underrated. A teenage debut single is supposed to be light and disposable; hers was a hundred-year-old orchestral theme sung in a low, unfashionably heavy alto. It worked immediately and enormously. By the following year her name was on both the Japan Record Awards and the Japan Cable Awards, and a Japan Gold Disc Award followed in 2005. For a first-year artist that is close to a clean sweep. But I have always thought a debut that size is a mixed inheritance. Land a song that big at nineteen and you spend the rest of your career being measured against a version of yourself that barely existed yet. Every subsequent release gets compared to a phenomenon rather than to a song. Plenty of singers never recover from that kind of opening. She did. She was back at the Japan Record Awards in 2009, five years on, which is the specific thing a one-hit artist cannot do. It helps that she is a musician before she is a vocalist. She trained at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and plays saxophone, and you can hear it — she phrases like someone who thinks in breath and line rather than in hooks. That is probably the real reason the career kept moving. The hit was luck and nerve. What came after it was craft.
