Azusa Watanabe

Azusa Watanabe starred in Wakko no Kin Medaru, the 43rd NHK Asadora, broadcast in 1989 and 1990, and it averaged a 33.8% rating. Numbers like that are almost unreadable today. Being the lead in a morning drama then meant becoming, quite literally, the face the country woke up to for six months. She was about twenty. What interests me is what came afterwards. The Asadora lead role is famously a double-edged gift: it makes you known instantly and then threatens to define you permanently, and the list of actresses who never escaped that frame is long. Watanabe kept working and kept widening the frame, taking on voice acting and television work alongside acting, affiliated with Toei Management and Mumeijuku. Born in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka, in 1969, she has built the kind of career that generates few headlines and a lot of continuity. Continuity is the harder achievement, and it is almost never the one people write about.
