My Take
Béla Tarr is, for me, one of cinema's most uncompromising visionaries. His stark black-and-white long takes and glacial pacing, most notoriously the seven-and-a-half-hour Sátántangó, demand endurance, but the spiritual residue they leave is unmatched. Winning the Silver Bear for The Turin Horse and then declaring he was done directing struck me as a perfectly austere exit, entirely in keeping with his vision. He pointed his camera at the marginalized and the desperate in bleak landscapes, and somehow found human dignity there. His passing in 2026 is a real loss. I hold this stubborn, poetic anarchist of a filmmaker in the highest regard.
