My Take

Bob Barker earned a kind of authority that television rarely grants anyone. Hosting The Price Is Right from 1972 to 2007, the longest-running game show in North American history, he became a daily fixture in millions of homes with a poise that never curdled into smugness. What moves me most, though, is how he used that platform: closing every episode by urging viewers to spay and neuter their pets, turning a game show into a quiet campaign for animal welfare.
