My Take

Booker T. Jones is, for my money, one of the great unsung architects of American music. As the frontman of Booker T. & the M.G.'s he gave soul its hypnotic, organ-driven backbone, but what fascinates me most is his dual life: a session musician quietly elevating legend after legend while still leaving a body of work under his own name. A Lifetime Achievement Grammy only confirms what the records already told us. I have a deep affection for artists who never crowd the spotlight yet whose absence you'd feel instantly. Born in 1944 in Memphis, he's living history, and I treasure him.
