My Take
Gaines is a reminder that television fame and theatrical greatness are not the same currency. Many will know him as Mark Royer on One Day at a Time, but his four Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards mark him as a genuine Broadway heavyweight. Winning Best Actor in a Musical in 1994, on top of a featured-acting Tony, shows a range that refuses to be boxed in. What I admire is that a man who could have coasted on TV recognition kept sharpening his craft on stage. That is the discipline of a true working actor, and it earns my full respect.
