My Take
Brendan Gleeson is, to my mind, the gold standard of the late bloomer. He did not fully commit to acting until his thirties, after years as a Dublin schoolteacher, and that lived-in maturity shows in every frame. His Churchill won him an Emmy, but I treasure him most in Irish films where his bulk and gentleness collide — menace and melancholy held in the same weathered face. He elevates everything he touches without ever seeming to ask for attention, and he raised a family of actors besides. If I could buy stock in screen presence, Gleeson would be a blue chip.
