My Take
To me Charles Schulz is something close to a patron saint of cartooning. The Minneapolis-born artist drew Peanuts and Snoopy in lines so spare yet so expressive that Charlie Brown's loneliness and warmth reach across every border and generation. What I love is the restraint, how little ink it took to say so much. A former amateur hockey player and Congressional Gold Medal winner, he kept drawing those strips alone to the very end. He died in 2000, but that beagle is still alive everywhere, and that endurance is the truest proof of his genius.
