Chen Shui-bian

Chen Shui-bian fascinates me because he did something genuinely historic: as the first Democratic Progressive Party president, he ended the Kuomintang's fifty-five years of unbroken rule in Taiwan. Whatever one makes of his later years, that pivot in 2000 belongs to the larger story of Taiwan's democratization. A lawyer trained at National Taiwan University who rose from rural Guantian to the presidency, nicknamed A-Bian, he embodies a populist climb that is hard not to respect. I treat him as a witness to a turning point in history, and I extend that quiet respect.
