My Take
Chiang Hung-chieh is one of those athletes who's genuinely impressive on two fronts — on the table and in terms of his life story. Born in Hsinchu and trained through Chinese Culture University, he carved out a real international career representing Taiwan, including at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the men's team event, which is no small feat in a sport absolutely dominated by China. But honestly? Outside of hardcore table tennis circles, a lot of people know him through his high-profile marriage to Japanese superstar Ai Fukuhara — a pairing that felt like the world's most wholesome cross-strait romance. Their eventual divorce in 2021 was handled with surprising dignity by both sides. Whatever the personal story, Chiang's paddlework stands on its own merits, and I respect anyone who holds their own at the Olympic level.
