Chris Peppler

Peppler is a Japanese-American born in Tokyo in 1957, and he built a career entirely out of his voice — radio personality and television presenter, including navigating J-Wave's Tokio Hot 100 and hosting Tokyo Eye 2020. Radio is a brutally honest medium. There is no face, no styling, no camera angle to hide behind; you have tone, timing and the silence between words, and that has to be enough to change the temperature of a stranger's room. Doing that for decades is a craft, not a personality trait. What strikes me most is the bilingual dimension. Someone moving fluidly between English and Japanese on Tokyo airwaves was, in that era, part of how the city presented its own cosmopolitan self-image back to itself — the sound of Tokyo wanting to be international. Radio gets written off as a dying format now, but voices like this outlast the format they arrived in. People remember them the way they remember a room.
