Chuck Palahniuk

Chuck Palahniuk occupies a singular place in contemporary fiction, and not only because Fight Club rewired pop culture. What I admire is the relentlessness—nineteen novels of transgressional fiction that refuse to flinch from human darkness, violence, and appetite. That kind of writing isn't for everyone, but its unsparing honesty is precisely what makes it feel true to me rather than gratuitous. From a working-class town in Washington and the University of Oregon, he built a voice that's instantly recognizable. Whatever you think of his subject matter, the man is a genuine storyteller with a craftsman's discipline, and that endurance commands respect.
