My Take

Claire Danes does something on screen that I cannot fully explain: she makes thinking visible. As a teenager she won a Golden Globe by simply seeming more real than television usually allowed; in Temple Grandin and Homeland she turned interior turmoil into riveting drama and collected Emmys for it. The famous cry-face jokes miss the point — that rawness is the product of total immersion, not vanity. Her mid-career detour to Yale tells you plenty about her priorities. Few actors of her generation have stayed this good for this long, and I suspect her best and strangest roles are still ahead of her.
