My Take
Costa-Gavras stands, for me, in a class of his own. A Greek-born director working out of France, he built a towering career by confronting politics head-on rather than retreating into safe entertainment. An Academy Award for adapted screenplay, the Cannes Jury Prize, the New York Critics' directing award, even the Legion of Honour, the recognition is global and richly earned. It takes uncommon nerve to keep making films that expose power and injustice, and the fact that he remained active into his nineties testifies to the depth of his conviction. Few filmmakers wear the title of social-conscience master so completely. I admire him without reservation.
