My Take
Daniel Auteuil is, to me, one of the towering actors of French cinema. Born in Algiers, he broke through with Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, and his trophy cabinet is extraordinary: two Cesar Awards, the 1996 Best Actor prize at Cannes for The Eighth Day, multiple European Film Awards. That's the resume of a heavyweight. He later moved into directing too, often returning to Marcel Pagnol's world. What I love is the range, from period drama to thriller to comedy, all carried with the same lived-in conviction. A genuine artist who simply keeps deepening his craft, decade after decade.
