David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg is, to me, the most philosophically serious horror filmmaker alive. Body horror sounds like a gimmick until you watch his films and realize the gore is a vehicle for real questions: where the self ends, what technology does to flesh, whether disease is transformation or destruction. I admire that he built this universe from Toronto, outside Hollywood's gravity, and that France and Canada kept pinning honors on a man whose movies make audiences squirm. Decades in, he is still interrogating the body — his own, now, as age becomes his subject. That intellectual stubbornness is exactly what mastery looks like.
