My Take

Hungate is the unsung anchor of early Toto, and anyone who really listens to those records knows it. His bass on tracks from the band's first era is precise without being clinical, locking in with the rhythm section in a way that made all those slick arrangements actually groove. I respect that he stepped back from the touring grind to focus on session work in Nashville rather than chasing the spotlight. That's a player who cared about the music more than the fame, and his fingerprints are on more hits than casual fans realize.

David Hungate (born 1948) is an American bassist and musician, best known as the original bass player for the rock band Toto. He performed on the group's early hit albums, including their Grammy-winning Toto IV, before leaving the band's touring lineup. He has also worked extensively as a session musician, particularly in Nashville.
