My Take

David Hyde Pierce is a master class in restraint and timing. As Niles Crane on Frasier he turned fastidious neurosis into something tender and hilarious, and four Emmys confirm what audiences already knew. What impresses me most is the range underneath that: a Yale-trained actor who also won a Tony for musical theatre and lends his voice to animation. He's not a flashy star, he's a craftsman who hides enormous intelligence inside seemingly effortless comedy. I rate the people who make difficult work look easy, and Pierce belongs firmly in that company. I hope we keep seeing him.
