My Take

Marney strikes me as the unglamorous engine every good side needs. A 183cm midfielder from Barking, East London, born in 1984, he built a long English career on graft rather than highlight reels, the kind of player whose value you notice only when he's missing. What I appreciate most is the second act: stepping into the U18 lead coaching role at Stoke City. Choosing to pour hard-won experience back into young players is, to me, the truest mark of a football lifer. Staying in the trenches after the playing days end deserves real respect, and he has mine.
