Ichiro Matsui

Born in 1964 in Yao, schooled in Fukuoka, and the son of a prefectural assembly speaker, Ichirō Matsui came up through Osaka's regional politics to serve two terms as governor and one as mayor before retiring in 2023. Whatever you make of his actual politics — and people land all over the place on that — I respect that you mostly know where he stands. He's not the type smiling sweetly with a knife behind his back. That heavy-browed, sharp-eyed stare could straighten your posture across a room. Love him or not, he strikes me as a hard-to-hate straight shooter.
