My Take
I have a soft spot for pitchers like Nobuyuki Hoshino, because he made his whole career out of refusing to do the obvious thing. In an era obsessed with velocity, here's this tall lefty from Asahikawa lobbing up some of the slowest stuff in the league and watching big swingers tie themselves in knots. That his actual X handle reads like "nobuyuki slow" kills me a little; the man knows exactly what he is and leans all the way in. It's pitching as a chess problem instead of an arm-wrestle, all change of pace and timing and quiet nerve. Now he talks the thinking-man's game as a commentator and on his own YouTube channel, which feels perfect. No flash, no swagger, just craft. I genuinely love this type of unhurried, low-key craftsman.
