Diego Sanchez

Diego Sanchez is the kind of fighter I think of as pure heart, sometimes to a fault. An Albuquerque native born on the last day of 1981, he won the Middleweight tournament on the very first season of The Ultimate Fighter, which makes him part of the show that arguably saved the UFC. His 2009 lightweight title challenge is the peak I remember most. What defines him for me, though, isn't the belt he didn't win but the relentless, forward-pressing style and emotional intensity he brought to the cage every time. A career stretching back to 2002 says everything about his durability and his love for the sport.
