My Take
What draws me to Donna Douglas isn't Elly May Clampett, iconic as that role was, but everything she did after the spotlight dimmed. Plenty of sitcom stars cling to a single character forever; Douglas reinvented herself as a real estate agent, gospel singer, speaker, and children's author. That second act, lived on her own quiet terms, tells me more about her character than any pageant sash or sitcom credit. I find that kind of self-directed reinvention genuinely admirable, and there's something fitting and serene about her passing on New Year's Day, 2015.
