Eiji Okuda

Eiji Okuda has had the kind of career that refuses to settle. Born in Kasugai, Aichi in 1950, he built his name as an actor who could play a magnetic leading man one year and a shabby, unlovable middle-aged man the next, and he took Best Actor at the Blue Ribbon Awards in 1995. Most performers would have banked that and stayed put. He went behind the camera instead, and the directing was serious enough to win the top prize at the Montreal World Film Festival rather than reading as a vanity project. His household is a workshop of makers: an essayist wife, one daughter an acclaimed actor, another a director. What impresses me most is the stamina, though. He is in his seventies and still working.
