My Take
Emir Kusturica is, for me, one of cinema's true sorcerers. Born in Sarajevo and shaped by the turbulence of the Balkans, he won the Palme d'Or not once but twice, a feat reserved for a tiny pantheon of directors. His films churn together brass-band chaos, festival-like exuberance, grief and slapstick into something nobody else could possibly stage. Add the Legion of Honour and his own music-making and you have an artist of dizzying range. Every time I watch his work I come away tasting life's bitterness and sweetness at once. He is genuinely irreplaceable, a filmmaker who turns sorrow into celebration.
