My Take
Imai left Naha as a teenager and became part of Speed, a group that felt less like a pop act than a national event in late-1990s Japan. They split in 2000; she sang solo, acted, then won a seat in Japan's upper house. Pop-star politicians rarely last. She has, and she keeps pushing on deaf issues and sign language that come from her own life.
