My Take

Garth Ennis is, to my mind, the most fearless pen in modern American comics. The Northern Irish writer behind Hellblazer, Preacher, a long Punisher run and above all The Boys has made a career of dismantling the hypocrisy of superheroes with gleeful, savage wit. Few writers expose the rot behind capes as bluntly as he does, and the 1998 Eisner for Best Writer confirms the industry knows it too. What keeps me reading is the odd tenderness buried under all that violence and cynicism, a real affection for flawed people. His work tends to sit heavy with you long after the last page.
