My Take
Gabby Hayes is my idea of a perfect character actor. Playing the bewhiskered, cantankerous yet loyal sidekick to John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy, he often became the most beloved face on screen, and stealing affection from leading men is the hardest job in cinema. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is well earned. There is real craft in being so reliably warm and funny across countless B-Westerns. He passed in 1969, but I still wish movies today had room for a lovable old grump like him. I hold him in high regard.
