My Take

Gladys Zender holds a place in history that I find genuinely stirring. Born in Lima in 1939, she was crowned Miss Universe in 1957 and became the first Latina ever to take the title. Standing on a global stage in her late teens, carrying her country's pride to the very top, took remarkable composure. Even in old photographs her elegant, dignified bearing comes through clearly.
