My Take
Gorilla Monsoon is one of my favorite kinds of figures: the larger-than-life athlete who became even more beloved after he left the ring. Towering and dominant as a villainous heavyweight, he reinvented himself as the warm, authoritative voice of the WWF through the 1980s and 1990s. His 1994 WWF Hall of Fame induction confirms what fans already felt. What strikes me is the intelligence beneath the spectacle, an Ithaca College man who understood the business deeply. He was a monster in name only, and a genuine institution in practice.
