Harriet Andersson

Harriet Andersson is one of those actresses whose presence rewires a frame the instant she enters it. Best known abroad as a pillar of Ingmar Bergman's company, she specialized in impulsive, working-class women rendered with a raw, unvarnished honesty that few performers ever risk. Her shelf of honors, from the Volpi Cup to the Bodil Award and Sweden's Litteris et Artibus, only confirms what the screen already tells you. What I love is her refusal to prettify; she plays desire, weakness, and grief whole. Born in 1932 in Stockholm, she remains a living monument of Nordic cinema, and I count her among the truly fearless screen actors.
