My Take
Hiromoto Okubo, better known in Japan by the nickname Dave, had two careers most people would consider mutually exclusive. First he was a catcher in Nippon Professional Baseball, with the Seibu Lions and later the Yomiuri Giants. Then, after retiring, he became a broadcast personality, a talker, a man with a comfortable second act. His coaching stint with Seibu was marred by violence: in 2009 he was fined for injuring a woman he knew, and in 2010 he was dismissed for assaulting players. And then he went back. He managed Rakuten's farm team, was promoted to manage the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in 2015, watched the club finish last, and resigned after a single season. On paper that is a failure. I read it differently. Someone already being paid to have opinions about baseball chose to go stand in the place where opinions get tested and usually hurt. That is not a small thing. Plenty of former players talk about the game. Far fewer are willing to be judged by it a second time.
