My Take
Hawkins interests me because his politics grew out of real working life, not abstraction. A Dartmouth alumnus who never took his degree and spent years as a transportation worker, he approaches environmental issues from the vantage point of labor, which lends his convictions weight. Co-founding the Green Party and standing as its 2020 presidential nominee meant carrying a third party with little chance of victory, and that takes uncommon resolve. Win or lose, I respect people who keep advocating for marginalized positions out of principle rather than ambition. Still active in his seventies, Hawkins strikes me as a genuine believer in the causes he champions.
