My Take

Berlin is a bass player's bass player, the guy whose phrasing and harmonic vocabulary make other virtuosos nod in respect. His work with Bill Bruford is essential fusion listening, and his solo records show a melodic mind that goes way beyond chops. What makes him fascinating is that he is just as famous for his opinions as his playing, he has spent years arguing that bassists should learn music rather than just slap and groove, and he does not soften it for anyone. You may not agree with all of it, but you cannot deny the man backs up his words. Few players combine that level of skill with that much conviction.

Jeff Berlin is an American jazz fusion bassist widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted electric bass players of his generation. Born in New York City, he studied at the Berklee College of Music and went on to work with leading fusion artists such as Bill Bruford, as well as recording acclaimed solo material. He is also known as an outspoken educator with strong, sometimes controversial views on music pedagogy.
