My Take
Jeffrey Donovan is one of those guys who deserves way more mainstream recognition than he gets, and I say that as someone who got completely hooked on Burn Notice back in the day. Playing Michael Westen — a burned CIA spy improvising his way through Miami with nothing but a fake ID and a talent for lying — is a deceptively hard role to pull off, and Donovan made it look effortless for seven seasons. But what really gets me is the range he's shown beyond that: he played Robert F. Kennedy in J. Edgar, then turned around and played JFK in LBJ, which is just a wild Kennedy-brothers double. Throw in a cold turn in Sicario and gritty work in Shot Caller, and you realize this UMass Amherst theater kid from a tiny Massachusetts coastal town quietly built one of the more interesting careers in American character acting.
