My Take
Jerome K. Jerome is, to me, one of literature's great quiet geniuses. Three Men in a Boat is essentially three friends and a dog drifting down the Thames doing very little, yet he spins it into one of the funniest books ever written. That ability to find warmth and hilarity in ordinary idleness is a far rarer gift than grand drama. Born in Walsall, he understood that everyday life, lovingly observed, is endlessly comic. More than a century on, his prose still loosens my shoulders and makes me grin. I treasure his particular brand of gentle, self-deprecating English humour.
