My Take
Jimmy Ruffin is one of those soul voices I keep returning to. Coming out of Mississippi and forever introduced as David Ruffin's older brother, he could have been a footnote, but 'What Becomes of the Brokenhearted' settles that argument forever. There's a dignity in how he sang heartbreak, never showy, always aching. He stayed productive from the sixties into the eighties, which tells me he was more than a one-hit name. I think Ruffin deserves to be remembered on his own terms, a singer who turned sorrow into something beautiful and lasting. His voice still lands.
