My Take
Joe Elliott is the voice of Def Leppard, and to me that's one of the great survival stories in rock. Out of Sheffield, he fronted the band through the very peak of polished, arena-filling hard rock. What gets me every time is that they pushed on after drummer Rick Allen lost an arm, refusing to break up, and Elliott was the constant out front through it all. His raspy, wide-ranging vocals carry that unapologetically big, melodic sound. I have a soft spot for performers who commit fully to being catchy and grand without irony, and the fact he's still touring and singing it makes it even cooler.
