My Take
John Lee Hooker is, to me, the most physical of bluesmen. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi and forged in Detroit, he played by feel rather than rule, often ignoring bar lines and chord changes to ride a single hypnotic groove powered by his stomping foot. That refusal to be tamed is exactly why his sound never aged. A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a Walk of Fame star all came, yet the music stayed gloriously raw. He died in 2001, but that low, gravelly drone still lands somewhere in the gut. The real thing simply doesn't date.
