John Torode

John Torode is a reminder that great food careers rarely follow straight lines. A Melbourne native, he crossed the world to become a fixture of British food culture, sharpening his craft in Conran's restaurants before running his own. What impresses me most is longevity: presenting a revamped MasterChef on BBC One from 2005 for two decades demands not just a discerning palate but the warmth to draw the best from nervous contestants. Sustaining a flagship show that long is a feat of consistency. I respect chefs who devote themselves equally to cooking well and to nurturing the next generation.
