My Take

What I admire about John Waters is how he weaponized bad taste into genuine art. The Baltimore native could never have out-polished Hollywood, so he out-provoked it, turning trash, drag, and outsiders into the stars of his frame. Yet beneath the shock value of Pink Flamingos lies real affection for misfits, and the joyous pop of Hairspray proves he could charm a mainstream audience too. That an Officer of Arts and Letters honor caps a career built on transgression feels perfectly right to me. He made the marginal central, and I find that quietly radical.
