My Take
Jonathan Hickman is, in my view, the architect of modern American comics. From creator-owned epics like The Manhattan Projects and East of West to his ground-up reinvention of the X-Men in House of X and Powers of X, he thinks in vast systems rather than single issues, seeding payoffs dozens of chapters ahead. That structural ambition is rare and demands real trust from readers, which he repeatedly earns. The 2019 Inkpot Award only confirms what fans already knew. I love writers who treat a long-form story as a cathedral to be built, and Hickman is one of the best at it.
