Joonas Suotamo

There is something wonderful about Joonas Suotamo's career arc. A 212-cm Finnish basketball player who studied at Penn State, he became the man inside Chewbacca, inheriting an iconic role from Peter Mayhew. What impresses me is how he grew from body double into the principal performer, carrying one of cinema's most beloved characters on his frame. Athletic training surely sharpened his physical instincts, and I suspect that body awareness is exactly what made his Chewie feel alive rather than costumed. He is a reminder that the actors we never quite see can still leave the warmest impressions.
